The Jefferson library is the place to be before school!  It’s a great place to visit with friends, work on projects, finish homework, and play games.  Yes, games.  Although the computers are off limits to gaming – except  for FirstMath – we have Chess, Checkers, Monopoly, Scrabble, and Battleship.  Challenge your friends to a game of chess; outstrategize them in Battleship. If you or anyone you know has gently used games they’d like to donate to the library, feel free to drop them off any time between 7:50 a.m  and 4:00 p.m. They will be put to good use!

We had a great time at the first meeting of the Jefferson Book Club on Thursday, October 29th . The month’s theme was, of course,  on all things scary.  We shared some scrumptious snacks and some spine tingly tales.  There were over 40 students in attendance!    If you didn’t make the first meeting, it’s never too late to join.  We will meet Tuesday, November 17th at 3:45 in the library.  This month we are all bringing our favorite book to share in a “book tasting”.  Don’t forget to bring those permission slips (you can get one from your reading teacher or stop by the library.)  Bring a friend! Come join the fun!

This week we are kicking off the 2009-2010 Lone Star Reading Incentive program. Students who read at least 5 of the 20 titles on this year’s list will win a prize and those reading 10 or more will be invited to an ice cream social after spring break.  The books on this list are amazing reads.  I just finished reading Unwind by Neil Shusterman.  It was a good choice for this time of year because the book’s premise is creepy.  The basic premise is that if your parents get fed up with you, they can have you “unwound”.  So beware all of you misbehaving teenagers!  You have to read it yourself to find out just exactly what being “unwound” means.  These books will appeal to parents and students.  Challenge one another to see who can read the most! The library has 3 or 4 copies of each book but if we don’t have it in, stop by the public library.  They have copies of all the titles too.  I’ve set up a blog just for this year’s Lone Stars so we can share our favorite parts, charactors, etc.  You can find it at:  http://libblog.nisd.net/jeffersonlonestar/  READ! READ! READ!

We have hundreds of books that are overdue from the library making these books unavailable to other students. PLEASE make sure if you have overdue library books that you either return them or stop by the library and renew them.

The Scholastic Book Fair is just around the corner (October 19-23) and we are all set to have an exciting week in the library. We are having a special evening session in conjunction with the PTA meeting Tuesday night. It will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. There will be loads of titles to choose from as well as posters, bookmarks and other reading related items. If you are interested in volunteering, please give me a call (397-3734). For every two hours you volunteer you will receive a coupon toward the purchase of items at the book fair. The money earned from sales at the fair go directly back into the school to benefit all of the students at Jefferson.
